I walk the South Downs and photograph as I go. Back in the studio, those photographs become starting points rather than references. I paint from sensation and memory, pressing layered pigments, textiles, shells and feathers into the surface, then slowly uncovering what's underneath.

The Many Truths of Josef Batten

My first novel came out in August 2025. Early readers kindly gave me some excellent feedback, that I was telling rather than showing. The primary character is Josef, a war photographer whose inner life was something readers should have been left to discover for themselves. So I'm rewriting a leaner version for re-release later this year.
