Some paintings are made to be touched as well as seen

I make paintings, drawings, photographs and books from a simple daily practice, most often a walk in the South Downs near my home in Lewes. A few photographs, a quick sketch, then work in the studio. Returning to the same paths allows a sense of place to accumulate; chalk edges, hill contours, hedgerow rhythms, the weather shifting the light. Combining the senses leads to a kind of musicality and this guides what I make.

In the studio I build surfaces slowly, layering linen or canvas with oil and graphite, then scrape and sand back so traces remain. Touch matters; some works are finished so they can be handled as well as looked at. I’m interested in visual storytelling informed by experiences from my creative and artistic journey: I left school at sixteen, travelled and worked in film and television. Later, I studied photography at UCA Farnham and started a digital agency. The themes in my debut novel, The Many Truths of Josef Batten, carry the same concerns as my art - memory, identity and connection.

The Many Truths of Josef Batten

After 21 years of trying, I completed my novel, The Many Truths of Josef Batten.

What began as a few scattered pages two decades ago has grown into a literary fiction novel about a man shaped by war, solitude, and the search for meaning through art.

Josef Batten, born in 1930s Poland and orphaned at birth, becomes one of the world’s most celebrated war photographers, yet lives as a ghost behind the camera, emotionally cut off from the world he documents.

After a breakdown in the late 1980s, he vanishes. When he re-emerges, it’s with a new focus: as a portraitist capturing the intimate beauty of human connection.

At the heart of his transformation is Adam Laidlaw, a young man who sees Josef not as a legend, but as a human being.

The Many Truths of Josef Batten is a story about trauma, memory, art, and the redemptive power of friendship. It asks what it means to truly see and be seen, and whether healing is possible after decades of detachment.
